About

The Synod on Synodality in the AMECEA Region.

The Synod on Synodality has found deep resonance in the AMECEA region, where its vision closely reflects a long-standing ecclesial experience. For decades, the Church in Eastern Africa has emphasized participation, communion, and mission as essential elements of its identity. Rooted in the understanding of the Church as the Family of God, the synodal process has affirmed pastoral approaches already present in the region, while also inviting renewed reflection and growth in how the Church journeys together as the People of God.

A distinctive contribution of the AMECEA region to the Synod on Synodality is the widespread practice of Small Christian Communities. These communities provide a concrete space where synodality is lived at the grassroots level through prayer, reflection on the Word of God, mutual listening, and shared discernment. Within SCCs, clergy, religious, and laity participate actively in the life and mission of the Church, fostering co-responsibility for evangelization and responsiveness to local pastoral and social realities.

The synodal consultations carried out across dioceses in the AMECEA region highlighted both strengths and challenges. Strong communal bonds, vibrant faith life, and commitment to justice and peace emerged as notable strengths. At the same time, concerns such as clericalism, limited inclusion of women and youth in leadership and decision-making, and the need for deeper formation in synodal leadership were clearly voiced, pointing to areas requiring ongoing conversion and renewal.

In the face of rapid social, cultural, and economic changes affecting Eastern Africa, the Synod on Synodality has called the Church in the AMECEA region to deepen collaboration, inclusivity, and missionary engagement. By strengthening synodal structures and attitudes, promoting dialogue, and responding to issues such as inequality, conflict, and care for creation, the Church is invited to continue witnessing to a synodal way of being Church. In doing so, the AMECEA region offers valuable lived experience and insight to the universal Church on what it means to journey together in faith and mission.
